The Top Retail Store in Every State

slobo / Getty Images

During Walmart’s explosive growth in the 1990s, the big chain store was coming to town and pushing out the local retailers people had known all their lives. But for residents of Arkansas, Walmart was the local retailer they had known their entire lives. While America’s retail landscape has increasingly solidified behind a collection of big names, our shopping experiences are less defined by the region where we live. However, those same stores that sprawled out across the entire country all had to start somewhere. And in some cases, the big box stores of today had to climb their own way to the top of the regional heap before taking things national.

GOBankingRates highlighted the largest retailer headquartered in every state, using data from Fortune, the National Retail Federation and Zippia. The study identified the retail store doing the most business for each state. And the results run the gamut from entirely regional enterprises like Michigan’s Meijer to global behemoths like Walmart, Lowe’s and Amazon.

So, here’s a closer look at the biggest retailer from your state.

More From GOBankingRates

Methodology: GOBankingRates found the top retailer in every state by using data from the National Retail Federation’s top 100 retailer 2019 report, Fortune’s top 500 companies report and Zippia’s largest 100 companies by state report. GOBankingRates used 2018 revenue as the qualification of “top retail store.” GOBankingRates also found the retailer’s headquarters location, CEO name and number of store locations. In order to be a retail store the company could not be healthcare-based, bank/financial-based and had to sell its own products (not just distribute). A brick-and-mortar store was required in most cases. All data was collected and is up-to-date as of Feb. 4, 2020.
