Walmart Is Making Holiday Shopping Even Easier With These Clever Tech Upgrades

[jwplayer rwX0SqDn-zw8bqYvo]

A full house for the holidays translates to extra groceries and gifts and, in turn, time spent shopping. Walmart wants to lighten that burden and give shoppers the gift of time by making shopping faster. It plans to do that by coupling the human touch with the speed of automation.

In a company-issued blog post, Walmart said that it believes the “high-tech, high-touch approach in which people and technology work together is the future of retail.” The company continues to invest in technology and maintains that automation has helped the retailer “add new positions and refine existing roles to make them more rewarding.” Walmart promoted around 230,000 people to jobs with higher pay in its 2018 fiscal year.

How Walmart’s Combination of Automation and Employees Helps Customers

Walmart has been expanding its time-saving tech enhancements for everything in its “everyday low prices” ecosystem. In 2017, the company introduced Pickup Towers. Now in more than 700 stores, Pickup Towers allow shoppers to make in-app product selections, drive to a Walmart, flash their code on their smartphone to the tower’s scanner and briefly wait for their purchase to appear. Walmart says the transaction’s elapsed time is between eight and 12 seconds.

The company has also upped its online grocery shopping service. Customers can make in-app grocery purchases and drive up to the store to have their fulfilled grocery order hand-delivered by a Walmart associate.

This customer service enhancement to the nation’s highest-grossing grocery chain blends shoppers’ preferences with convenience-designed technology. Shoppers save time using the app while Walmart associates, with the aid of AI-infused technology, assemble each grocery order.

This means that you can order your groceries, holiday presents and standard Walmart purchases through the company’s app. When you’re ready, just swing by Walmart and have your groceries hand-delivered to your car, then stop by a Pickup Tower to get your purchased holiday gifts, wrapping paper and extra linens for your holiday guests — all within a short time frame.

It appears that the retail giant is tailoring its shopping experience in the right way: Six in 10 customers surveyed by the National Retail Federation cited their preferences for modern time-savers like self-checkout, mobile payments, in-store pickup and in-store navigation. To that end, Walmart has overhauled its in-store operations and leaned into automation and robots to unload trucks and stocking shelves in recent years.
